In class, we learned a very important factor of research documents. In class we learned how to cite a document or anything that, as students and future educators, we are suppose to know what is a real source. So we also learned the differences between MLA and APA formats.

Two differences between these two formats are that:
APA covers more detailed information by adding parenthesis. This covers more specific documents, while MLA style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources.

Part II: Documenting Your Research

A description of my research process:

a) Knowing that I can find some related information if I find the correct wording input. I first visited the Academic Search Premier.

b) I traveled to the LexisNexis site as it provided previous information to my topic, but the difficulty behind this site is specific phrases are hard to find. Moreover, as useful information as it is, the documents that LexisNexis provides are world wide therefore making it difficult to find specific American articles.

c) I used terms such as "teen employment", "part time employers", "teen summer jobs"

d) I tried to scan the articles and quickly paraphrase these articles, but I used the evaluative technique in differences in periodicals.

e) I revisited previous research logs and took phrases-key words that allowed me to redefine my search.

Some of these contain good information but it was hard to find these articles. In each source, I found statistical numbers, facts and opinions on the idea that directly involves into student development as an adult in the work force.

I identified information the type of periodical, and most of the types I found them to be scholarly/research. These articles are well developed by educators and have taken time to be researched. I found that there is an increase of student workers, more importantly during the summer time. The summer period, research has documented that teens rush and decide to keep such jobs for their own benefit. Some teens want summer jobs to earn cash for cars, clothes and CDs. Others want to learn job skills they can parlay into rewarding careers.

Is it possible that low paying jobs seek teenagers?
Do minorities teenagers have a bigger presence in the work force?

Another database that I can use which would allow me to get a greater in depth knowledge is the Google Scholar. This site allows for more articles although some articles can be fake or pointless. Therefore, I will have to become cautious and use the information learned from the class to find mature and scholarly articles.

Refining My Search

3. As I continue to learn the several useful forms of database and library searching I find that my searches are becoming more and more successful. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty of my topic I can only find certain pieces to the puzzle. Although this is true, I do find important and useful information. I continue to encounter different sources in which I can conduct my searches, recently is the understanding of call numbers and getting to know how to find a book at the direct source.

The Usage and Power of the Catalog

We class we discussed the usage of the Hayward Catalog by analyzing the purpose for search phrases such as "Words", "Subject Headings", and "Call Numbers". The reason for these is to find books or articles in such nature inside the library. We learned how to read the call number codes, and we out on a scavenger hunt to find our related topics.

b) Words used in order to find articles give titles and subjects to find related topics but do not necessarily focus on the topic. It can be seen that it reacts in a fashion that a search engine would. Subject Headings are works that have specific names and or titles. They work in unison to words but are more specific and narrowing down the topic.

c) The advantage of using these strategies are enormous especially when trying to find a specific book at your school. It is important to read these call numbers when trying to get a book and you want to find it yourself. On the other hand, using words can be difficult cause there are too many words that can describe other words and phrases totally unrelated to your subject.

c) Checking databases, I found a few good sites. he majority of the very minimal searches that I have encountered are based upon trade/professional enquirers. I found out that students normally drop out of high school because of the opportunities that money provides. On the other hand, students rate drops because of spending time at work and focusing less on school work. For some people, there are no choices, therefore they have to drop out to support themselves and family. The difficulty behind the topic that I have chosen is that, the wording can cause fewer searches. But by over concentrating on specific areas the increase in teenagers with part time jobs, I can come to see overall reasons for the to chose this line of work. But I did find a very good article that was professionally written by university professors.

To Find a Periodical...

What a fun day it was today in class! This time, we focused on different types of periodic and how they appeal to the consumer. The different kinds of category allows people to easily search for what they are looking for. We learned the difference between Popular magazines, Scholarly and trade professional magazines.

b) The difference between the three is that:
1. Popular magazines involved current news, newest trends, general interest, etc
2. Scholarly focuses primarily on research articles, novels, books, all involving some form and purpose for educative development.
3. Professional trade magazines tend to show information about the business world, company information's, new products and all involving business factors.

c) Print forms, they are written years before and then published over time. Unfortunately, finding the current articles about these forms are difficult to find. The electronic forms are not necessarily better, but they do tend to have more current information, since more people are using the Internet. And the unfortunate factor about that is one would have to use a good database in order to find articles.

Research Process and the findings of Teen Jobs

In English, we read an article about teenagers working in low-skills job such as McDonald's to earn an income of sorts. The article, Working at McDonald's, by Amitai Etzioni focuses on his point on of view and studies about high school seniors that work for these fast food restaurants and tend to show less interest in school. I will focus on the study of the twenty first century teenager and the importance for them as individuals to obtain a part time job.
